Keys to Coaching Basketball Success: The Discovery Method
2007-01-31 00:00:00

Every parent of a child wants to help there child succeed in life and if they play basketball they want some level of success on the basketball court.

A good youth basketball coach should also want success for every child on the team, both on the court and in life.

One of the most effective was of teaching a child a skill is to use the discovery method.  Using this method allows the children to discover the answer to a problem on there own.

For example,

if you want to teach your players how to properly dribble then you would use something like this:

Coach: "Watch This.  You tell me which part of my hand I use when I dribble this basketball.  Where is my head while I dribble the basketball?  Where am I looking?"

Let your players tell you whats going on with this dribbling drill and have them explain why you are doing it that away.

One great thing about the discovery method is that all of your players are focused on what is going on in front of them.  They are more likely to focus on you dribbling the ball and them coming up with an explanation of whats going on an why, than if you use the lecture method.

Lecture Method (DON'T use, its boring)

Coach: "This is the part of the hand you dribble with, your head goes here, you look here... blah blah blah"

Its boring, your young basketball players will lose focus easily.

Everyone has a greater chance of remembering something that they discovered on there own, rather than being lectured.

Use the discovery method to teach your basketball team, it works.
